Quieting Anxiety

Carrying today without the weight of tomorrow.

Have you ever lain awake at night going through everything that could go wrong tomorrow? Anxiety rarely shows up as one large fear. It arrives as a steady line of small ones, a list that rewrites itself the moment you finish it. Your body is tired, and your mind keeps working anyway.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Matthew 6:34

Jesus says this at the end of a long teaching about food, clothing, and a Father who feeds the birds. The older English, “take therefore no thought for the morrow,” is not asking you to stop planning, but to stop being pulled apart by worry. And He does not pretend tomorrow will be light. He says the opposite: each day already carries enough of its own trouble.

That changes the size of what you carry today. Anxiety borrows tomorrow’s weight and stacks it on this morning, which is part of why it exhausts you. Jesus does not promise the worry disappears once you trust enough. He gives a smaller and more possible assignment: today only, with a Father already there when tomorrow arrives.

One step today

Today, write down the three things worrying you most. Mark the ones that belong to tomorrow rather than to today, and pray one sentence over each: “Lord, this one is Yours until it gets here.”

Remember

Today has enough in it. Tomorrow already has God in it.

Worry that will not switch off, or that keeps you from sleeping and working, is worth mentioning to a doctor or a counselor. Bringing it to God and bringing it to someone qualified belong together.
