Keeping Wonder
Letting amazement turn into thanks before it fades.
Have you ever had something good happen that you had no words for? The kind that stops you where you stand. A result you were sure would go the other way. A person who showed up. For a few seconds you cannot think straight, and you are not sure whether to laugh or to cry.
And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
Luke 5:26
Just before this, some men carried a man who could not walk onto a roof and lowered him through the tiles, because the crowd was too thick. Jesus told him to rise, take up his couch, and go home, and he did. Notice how honest the reaction is. The crowd glorified God, and they were also filled with fear, and all they could find to say was that they had seen something strange.
Astonishment does not last. Within a day it becomes a story you tell, and within a week just something that happened. What the crowd did was turn theirs toward God out loud, on the same day, before it cooled. You do not have to understand a good thing to thank God for it. They never explained what they saw. They only refused to let it pass in silence.
Today, name one good thing you cannot fully explain, from this week or from years ago. Say it out loud to God in a single sentence beginning with thank You. Then write it somewhere you will find it again.
Wonder does not need an explanation before it can become thanks.
