Easing Dread
Meeting what is ahead knowing God is already there.
Is there a date on your calendar you would rather not reach? Dread is not the same as a passing worry. It has a shape and a time: the appointment, the result, the conversation you know is coming. The waiting can weigh more than the day itself.
And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
Deuteronomy 31:8
Moses spoke these words near the end of his life, to Joshua and to a people about to enter a land an earlier generation had been too afraid to enter. He never called the danger imaginary. What he gave them was the order of events: the LORD is the one who goes before you. God would be there before they arrived, and He would not fail them or forsake them.
Dread makes us live the hard day over and over before it arrives. This verse does not promise the day will be easy, or that it will not come. It promises you will not walk into it alone, and not first. Whatever is on the calendar, God is already on the far side of it. That does not make the waiting pleasant. It changes who is waiting with you.
Today, say out loud the thing you are dreading, with its date. Then pray one sentence over it: “Lord, You are already there.” Then tell one person you trust what that date is, so you are not carrying it silently.
God is already on the other side of the day I am dreading.
If the dread settles in and stops lifting, or it starts shaping most of your days, telling a doctor or a counselor is a good step. That conversation and prayer can sit side by side.
