Navigating Sadness
Finding comfort when grief and sorrow overwhelm the heart.
Have you ever felt a heavy weight in your chest that makes even getting out of bed feel impossible? Sadness can make you feel completely isolated, as if a dark cloud has separated you from the rest of the happy world. It leaves you wondering if the pain will ever end or if anyone truly cares.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psalm 34:18
This scripture meets us directly in the lowest depths of human grief. It counters the lie that God distances Himself from us when we are sad or struggling. Instead, the text reveals that heartbreak acts like a magnet for God’s presence, drawing Him closer to us than ever.
To be “contrite in spirit” describes a total loss of internal strength and hope. Yet, the biblical promise is not condemnation for lack of faith, but immediate salvation and tenderness. He does not watch your pain from a distance; He steps into the brokenness to rescue you.
Today, identify the primary source of your sadness, write it down on a piece of paper, and hand it over to God. Pray this short prayer: “Lord, my heart is broken, but I trust that You are near me right now.”
A broken heart does not push God away. It draws Him near.
